Surface currents and slope selection in crystal growth

چکیده

We face the problem to determine the slope dependent current during the epitaxial growth process of a crystal surface. This current is proportional to δ = p+ − p−, where p± are the probabilities for an atom landing on a terrace to attach to the ascending (p+) or descending (p−) step. If the landing probability is spatially uniform, the current is also proportional to the average (signed) distance traveled by an adatom before incorporation in the growing surface. The phenomenon of slope selection is determined by the vanishing of the asymmetry δ. We apply our results to the case of atoms feeling step edge barriers and downward funnelling, or step edge barriers and steering. In the general case, it is not correct to consider the slope dependent current J as a sum of separate contributions due to different mechanisms.

Characterization and Investigation of Grain Selection in Spiral Grain Selectors during Casting Single-Crystal Turbine Blades

Manufactured single crystal components using Ni-base super alloys are routinely used in the hot sections of aero engines and industrial gas turbines due to their outstanding high temperature strength, toughness and resistance to degradation in corrosive and oxidative environments. To control the quality of the single crystal turbine blades, particular attention has been paid to grain selection,...

Investigation of Different Stages of Aluminum Fluoride Crystal Growth

Crystallization of Aluminum fluoride at atmospheric pressure has been considered. Structure, size and shape of crystals formed during the crystallization process have been investigated. By applying the direct analysis method for the existed aluminum in solution, the aluminum fluoride nucleation process has been detected as a concentration valley at the outset of crystallization process. The...

Numerical modelling of induced rip currents by discontinuous submerged breakwaters

Submerged breakwaters are one of the shore protective structures. Any discontinuity in these breakwaters causes changes on current parameters including speed and water surface profile. In this paper, discontinuous submerged breakwaters were modelled to investigate the changes in the wave and flow pattern. To investigate the phenomenon, three models including a shore with constant slope, a shore ...

Crystal size distribution analysis of plagioclase in Neogene-Quaternary olivine basaltic lava flows in Dehaj-Javazm area, northwest of Shahre-Babak, Kerman

1. Introduction The rather limited Neogene-Quaternary olivine basaltic lava flows are outcropped in the Dehaj-Javazm area, north of Share-Babak, in the NW of Dehaj-Sarduieh magmatic belt as a part of the Urumieh-Dokhtar magmatic assemblage (UDMA). The rocks contain significant amounts of plagioclase both as phenocrysts and microliths in the microlithic groundmass which play an important role i...
